What exactly is door-to-door auto transport?

Just as the name suggests, door-to-door transport is all about making your move as easy as possible. Instead of you having to drive to a busy shipping terminal or a storage lot to drop off or pick up your car, the carrier comes directly to you.

You simply give us the addresses, and our driver will get as close to your front door as safely possible for both the pickup and the delivery. It completely removes the hassle of coordinating extra rides or navigating confusing warehouse hubs.

What is terminal-to-terminal shipping?

Terminal-to-terminal transport is a bit like taking a bus—you meet the carrier at a specific "station" or storage lot rather than having them come to your house. You drop your vehicle off at a designated facility at the start of the trip, and it’s delivered to another lot at the destination for you to pick up later.

While this can sometimes be a cheaper option, it’s generally not the first choice for most of our customers. The main reason is the extra legwork involved; these storage lots are often located far away from residential areas, meaning you’ll have to arrange a ride to and from the terminal. There’s also the potential for storage fees if you can’t pick up the car immediately.

Terminal vs. Door-to-Door: Which fits you? If you have plenty of time and are looking for the absolute lowest price, a terminal might work. However, if you value your time and want to avoid the headache of coordinating rides to a distant lot, our door-to-door service is almost always the better, more convenient path.

How much does door-to-door shipping cost?

Because every move is unique, there isn't a "one size fits all" price. Instead, your quote is built around a few specific factors that influence how much work and fuel it takes to get your car home.

Your Vehicle’s Size: Smaller cars are the easiest to transport and take up the least space, so they’re the most affordable. Larger SUVs or heavy trucks require more room and more fuel to pull, which naturally adds a bit to the cost.

The Distance: It’s pretty simple—the further the driver has to travel, the more the trip will cost. However, long-distance trips (like coast-to-coast) often have a lower rate per mile than short, local hops.

How Fast You Need It: If you have a flexible schedule, you’ll get the best possible rate. If you’re in a hurry and need "expedited" shipping to get your car on the road immediately, expect to pay a premium for that priority service.

Running Condition: If your car starts and drives, it’s easy for the driver to roll it onto the trailer. If it’s "inoperable" (doesn't run), we have to use special winches and equipment to load it, which adds a labor fee.

The Season: Timing matters! Interestingly, summer is the busiest season, but winter can actually be more expensive in some areas. This is because icy roads and dangerous conditions make the job much harder for drivers, and those risks are reflected in the price.

Distance Type of Transport Average Price Per Mile Sample Distance Sample Price
0-500 miles $0.80 250 miles $200
500 – 1000 miles $0.73 700 miles $511
1000 – 1500 miles $0.70 1000 miles $700
1500 – 2000 miles $0.48 1750 miles $840
2000 – 2500 miles $0.37 2400 miles $888
2500 – 3000 miles $0.35 2700 miles $945
3000+ miles $0.33 3200 miles $1122

The average per-mile rates listed above are based on current market conditions as of 2026. Pricing may fluctuate due to factors such as seasonal demand, fuel costs, pickup and delivery locations, and other variables.

Which shipping service is right for you?

Open Auto Transport

Our open car transport service offers outstanding value at an affordable price. It’s a popular choice because it’s reliable, efficient, and quick to schedule. Your vehicle is shipped on a truck and trailer with other cars, using an open-sided carrier that remains safe and secure throughout the journey. With simple booking, fast turnaround times, and overall convenience, it’s an easy option for most customers.

Enclose Auto Transport

Choose our enclosed auto transport service when you’re shipping a vehicle that truly matters to you. Enclosed trailers provide full protection on all sides, keeping your car safe from weather, dust, and road debris. Whether you own a new, classic, luxury, high-end, custom, antique, or vintage vehicle, we’ll ensure it’s transported with the care and attention it deserves.

How long does door-to-door auto transport take?

Several factors can influence how long it takes to transport a vehicle. Distance plays the biggest role—shipping a car from Boston to San Diego will naturally take more time than moving one from Boston to New York. Pickup and delivery locations also matter. If either location is in a remote area, the driver may need extra time to reach it. In addition, vehicles are usually transported alongside others, so the carrier may make multiple stops before your car arrives.

Weather conditions can also slow things down. Snow, ice, heavy rain, thunderstorms, or severe weather along the route can impact traffic flow. Road construction, detours, and congestion may cause further delays. Another important factor is driver availability. Federal regulations limit how many hours a truck driver can be on the road each week—currently capped at 70 hours by the Department of Transportation. These rules are in place to ensure drivers stay rested and operate safely.

Distance Avg. transit time(calendar days)
0-200 miles 1-2 day
200 – 600 miles 2-4 day
600 – 1000 miles 3-5 day
1000 – 1500 miles 4-6 day
1500 – 2000 miles 5-7 day
2000 – 2400 miles 6-8 day
2400+ miles 7-9 day

The average transit times listed above may vary due to weather, road conditions, traffic, and other factors.
