How Much Will It Cost To Ship My Vehicle?

July 11th, 2011

Now That Is A Loaded Question

However, with the information available to you on the internet, we not only have answers but can also supply good reasons for those answers.

First you must understand the reasons for the variety in prices throughout the industry of shipping vehicles. And believe me there are several.

Fixed Costs: You must first purchase the truck and trailer, around $500,000.00 or more. Then add the cost of insurance at $10,000.00 – $25,000.00 per year, plus the cost of a driver, maintenance, tires, depreciation, and fuel (which is currently running over $4.00 per gallon. Consumed at a rate of around 3 – 5 miles per gallon). You can’t forget the cost of licensing, permitting and other unmentioned costs. You start to get the idea of how expensive it really is.

Costs of Marketing: The cost of acquiring new customers can be expensive and may even run serveral thousand dollars per month for the owner of an auto transport rig.

In the auto transport business you will find there are several schools of thought on pricing auto shipments. There are high dollars individuals who simply won’t move their trucks unless properly compensated. Also, you will find the folks who really want the volume and therefore kind of have the Wal Mart mentality. They try to provide you with super low pricing in order to stay very busy. Somewhere from top to bottom and everywhere in between you will find that price you approve of.

Comparing several prices is of course the secret to discovering that range of pricing you desire. Simply provide them with your email address and phone number and then wait to be contacted in a prompt manner. Or you can simply pickup the phone and give them a call.

The American Trucker has the distinct reputation for being an independent spirit. This can translate into a very wide variety of pricing for the same job when you compare it among several trucking companies. This is definitely one area of business where being smart really pays off. There will be several prices available, and it’s not about being right or wrong, so it really pays to do your homework.

Just a word about differences in business methodology. Some brokers expect a deposit up front and some don’t. Both are correct, they just don’t agree and that’s perfectly OK. Most want final payment in the form of a cashier’s check or money order, and that is the norm for trucking.

As you search for pricing, one of the best ways is to simply do a Google search for auto shipping quotes. You will see many selections to choose from for a pricing source. Simply pick the one that appeals to you and give them the requested information. Once you receive all of your quotes you will want to be sure and ask all of the questions you have concerning any areas not fully understood. The broker you will be speaking with will be happy to answer those questions should he really want your business.

Quotes received will be from brokers that will only select the really good guys to transport your vehicle. This pre-screening done for you is an additional service that really enhances your auto transport experience.

The Convenience of Choosing Freight Services

June 13th, 2011

Today, there are different products and items of various sizes and weights being shipped all over the world. Freight shipping services are provided by companies that specialize in transporting specific types of cargo from one location to another. Examples of freight cargo can include vehicles, manufacturing goods and equipment, boats, farming machinery, and much more. When these companies ship such large, heavy, and awkward items, they will load them into such holding devices as cargo containers and flat bed trucks. Shipping methods can include: freight trains, cargo planes, special transport trucks, and cargo ships. This shipping service can be used by individuals, business, and industry.

When freight shippers ship by road, items will be put in large transport trucks. It is used for domestic shipping where the items are not too large for the transport truck. When shipping by cargo train, items shipped are often too large for a transport truck or the railway is a convenient method to load and unload the items. Farm supplies and vehicles, bulk goods, fuel, are examples of what can be shipped using rail. Shipping by sea is used for shipping items too big for a cargo plan. International shipping is big part of this service. Items that are transported can industrial and manufacturing vehicles, heavy machinery…etc. Shipping by air involves shipping by cargo airplane. It is used for big bulk items and when there are time constraints and international shipping.

Freight is word that refers to the large size, weight, and volume used for the huge size, volume, and weight of products that are to be shipped. They take on the task and responsibility of making sure the freight is shipped securely and safely to its destination in a timely manner. If you have a shipment of more than 100 pounds that is very large, heavy, and difficult to manage, you should consider the services of a freight shipping company.

How To Select a Superior Vehicle Transport Company

March 26th, 2011

Chances are, you have never considered shipping your auto before now, and are overwhelmed by the prospects of choosing a company. There are some steps to take in locating the right company for you that will help you in this process.

An important thing you want to consider is how readily the company offers to show their insurance policy. Do not trust your car to companies which do not cover the cargo they handle. Even if they seem decent, they are not doing to well if they cannot afford insurance. They are either already in a lot of legal trouble or they are just waiting to swindle a few more customers before they close and escape with the profits of an uninsured, ill-managed business (a sort of hit and run strategy, not uncommon among people who would be businessmen, yet who cannot adequately run a business).

Of course you want an honest company, but you also want one that is well-capitalized and can offer several insurance policies for you to select depending upon your requirements. Your personal insurance may not cover your possessions adequately when shipping your auto. Pick a policy from the shipping company that extends your personal policy to cover this excess. This type of policy is known as excess insurance. Primary insurance is also offered which offers coverage independently of any insurance you own. The company should give you a rundown of the types of damage and accidents common to the industry to aid you in your decision of the coverage you need appropriate to your situation.

Once you have these issues settles, you can move on to the next stage of preparing and submitting your car. There are several types of trucks and services. You have probably seen more open carriers than container carriers around. Open carriers are preferred by many customers because they are less expensive. In many cases the distances the cargo has to travel are particularly large, and if weather is fair open trucks often move out more quickly.

A lot of container shipping is done by sea. Closed carrier trucks are costlier than open carriers. Moreover, companies prefer to wait until a container truck is loaded with a maximum of cars before shipping, which means you will have to wait, perhaps a long time, unless you are willing to pay to compensate them for early delivery.

Inside a closed truck or container your car is more secure. It is less likely to be stolen or damaged by elements outside the shipping process, like weather or vandals. If your car has to endure a long trip or if it is an unusual vehicle, an expensive or fragile collector’s item, and if you want to hold on to what you have already spent a fortune buying and maintaining, best opt for closed carrier shipping.

The dependable companies insure their cargo and will compensate the customer for any damage caused to their vehicle while under their care. They also carry liability insurance of at least $800,000 to cover the damages done to multiple vehicles. Obviously there is no reputable company that profits from the mishandling or harm done to their customers’ property. They want their cargo insured. The dishonest company won’t care and won’t offer adequate insurance and will probably not even mention insurance to you.

Auto Shipping – The Importance Of Auto Inspections

March 23rd, 2011

As an auto shipping customer, there are several important questions that we ask ourselves, concerning our vehicle when deciding on the right auto shipping company. How much will it cost to ship my car, truck, or van from point A to point B? How long with the transport take?

Also of prime importance is the safety of the vehicle from the beginning of its journey to the end. You want to receive the vehicle at the end in the same condition as it was in the beginning. This only happens if you take the important step of a thorough inspection of your vehicle before you hand it over to the auto shipping company. Some key points in the inspection follow.

Before and after shipping, make sure to do a thorough inspection of the entire vehicle with a representative from the shipping company. That way you can both agree and sign off on any existing damage before departure, and any new damage that may have happened during transport. Make sure that you get a signed copy of the condition report before turning your car over to the driver.

You will also want to inspect the functionality of the vehicle to make sure that the lights work, the turn signals, and everything else that should function normally when you turn the key. Take pictures inside as well. Things can get knocked around and you don’t want to have to pay to fix these yourself.

Windows are prone to damage when being shipped along with whatever else may be in the auto transporting vehicle. Check all windows and the windshield thoroughly for preexisting cracks and holes. A little crack may not have bothered you before but don’t let it go unnoticed at this point. A small chip can escalate into a big crack that will definitely bother you now.

Okay, so what do you do if you do find damage to your vehicle at journey’s end?

Foremost, you must report any damages immediately. Immediate reporting will stop short any confusion as to how the vehicle sustained the damage. You will then have a much better chance of getting it fixed and not at your expense.

Again, pictures are terrific. Take as many as you can from as many angles as you can. This is one case where a picture is really worth a thousand words. There is no better proof to substantiate a claim than photographic evidence of damages.

If the car did suffer damages, the shipping company will normally allow you to get your own estimate from your usual auto shop and have it repaired there. If you don’t have a usual auto repair place, a dealership is generally a good bet.

Hopefully, your vehicle will not sustain any damages at all. But better to be safe than sorry. By following the above before-and-after-journey steps to inspect your vehicle, you will not go wrong no matter what folly occurs during shipment.

Auto Shipping: Moving To A Greener Environment

March 11th, 2011

Due to the increasing evidence of our planet’s destruction by environmental pollution and the growing concern among nations, industries have stepped up their efforts to operate in an increasingly environmentally clean manner with large established companies in wealthier nations leading the way. The public awareness has increased to the extent that the waiting list for hybrid cars is growing longer and longer.

Landfill waste and energy consumption is reduced through green homebuilding, which seems to have caught on. Cities start campaign such as those meant to reduce electricity consumption by up to 80% through replacement of regular light bulbs for more effective and economic innovative illumination. One can see great transparent plastic containers in public squares half-filled with discarded bulbs or batteries.

Auto shipping companies are following this path and are attempting to stop the depletion of our natural resources and to reduce global warming. The auto shipping is a rather recent development and is experiencing massive growth in our increasingly global society. Because of their newness, they are keenly aware of modern problems such as environmental pollution of all kinds and have been part of the green movement for years, with very little fanfare.

It is undoubtedly due to this new emergence of the industry that they are able to understand their potential for cleaning up the planet. In the wake of serious environmental pollution caused by container vessels, oil freighters and trucks, to name a few of the master polluters, they must put a great deal of effort into innovative technology to avoid future accidents in their own shipping industry as well as in others. They desire to do this because it is the right thing to do for the environment and the right thing to do for the economic survival of this huge and burgeoning industry.

One rather large auto shipping company has the ability to save up to three million gallons of fuel by some estimations, thereby reducing greenhouse gases by 38 million pounds that would otherwise drift into our atmosphere. The expansion of the industry is a given and with the increasing globalization of our society, their future looks secure. They must expand in a most environmentally friendly way.

Lets do the math. The benefits to our environment of eco-friendly auto shipping companies is staggering. Take a hypothetical case of only one auto shipping company per state, the national savings would amount to around 150 million gallons of fuel and approximately two billion pounds of greenhouse gases not pumped into our atmosphere. If only even half of the auto shipping companies would unite their efforts and support green technology, the result would be to make tremendous progress towards a greener environment.

Obviously, there is an incredible number of personal vehicles being driven on the roads today. There is no one industry that can save us all. But those industries taking the lead in environmentally clean practices should be very proud of their achievements and will stand as an example to other industries to become future-oriented as well. These green industries just may make the transition to becoming technologically and environmentally innovative while remaining in the upper echelons of the industrial world.

Auto Transport: Better Safe Than Sorry

March 9th, 2011

The auto shipping proves by its rapid expansion that it is an efficient and safe industry with which to do business. At the same time along the way the industry has accumulated valuable experience with regard to technology and methods of operation.

Because of this growth, more entrepreneurs are coming into the business whether or not they have the industry knowledge and resources to offer real competition. Many of these upstarts are entering the shipping business not just because the growth and operating challenges excite them, but because owning your own business, any business is the thing to do in these days of economic downturns and job losses. You don’t want to get involved with a company who has no knowledge or experience in the shipping industry. They are not in it to perform a safe and reliable service to their customers.

The result of this growth then, is not just the ability to offer more and better services, but a growth in businesses with no level of competence. Many of these will blissfully fail before they even get off the ground, but there will remain those whose decline follows a slower path. These are the ones to be wary of. They know they are failing and are trying to cram as much business in as they can before their final, inevitable demise.

Moreover, new companies which will soon close are not always easy to detect. Their self-presentation and the prices may convince you that they are dependable. But the last thing you want to do is to trust a company which promises a terrific deal but delivers your car late to the wrong terminal, with property stolen, leaving you to discover that you have not insured the trip against damage and theft.

You must take the time to ensure the safety of your vehicle and all that is in it. A careful research of several companies is a must. You should start your analysis months before you intend to ship your auto, and it must be a careful analysis of the market.

It is to your advantage to plan the shipping way in advance. This will allow booking the shipment way in advance also. The more urgent the order, the higher the price you will pay because undue pressure is being put on the company and its personnel. Also giving the company plenty of time will give them plenty of time to do a thorough, careful job of shipping your vehicle at a good price.

Businesses do not like to decline offers, especially when dealing with individual private car owners, and are likely to take your order even if they know they are unlikely to complete it satisfactorily. Urgency increases the risk of delay and damage.

Moreover, make sure to check their MC license and their Insurance Certificate. Review the insurance carefully to make sure that it adequately covers your car.

A sure sign of the competence of any company is their customer service attitude. They should show eagerness to satisfy you and initiative in bringing out what is most important to you. The dependable, quality company will have no reticence in showing and explaining their insurance coverage or their licensing to you. If they see that their standard insurance coverage is inadequate for your needs, they will advise you to purchase extra. If these points are not covered in your discussions with them, find another company.

Transporting Your Car Successfully Through an Auto Shipping Company

February 19th, 2011

Most of our endeavors can be taken in steps – first baby steps then on to a final full run. You can’t play football without a goal line and a ball. You can’t knit without needles and yarn. One must have the proper tools to reach a successful ending to the job at hand. Let us stretch this concept to shipping your car. First step is to decide which auto transportation company to use and how to go about this.

From the early stages to the final one there are some best practice steps for you to follow. First item on the list is to research the various auto shipping companies by reading articles, visiting auto shipping websites and networking with people who have had experience with shipping their cars or such businesses as auto dealerships who regularly depend on auto shippers. Once you have a good basic knowledge of how the industry works and the services they offer, look into a few providers and/or brokers.

The next step is to get your documentation together. Necessary documents include driver’s license, registration, proof of insurance and vehicle specifications. Now, providing you have narrowed your search down to one auto transportation company or broker to work with, it is time to negotiate a price.

Price will depend on distance traveled, shipping container used, weight of the shipment and the time frame allowed for pickup and delivery. There will also be miscellaneous expenses involved. Once the deal has been set between you and the auto shipper, review in detail the terms and conditions of the contract paying special attention to the cancellation fees and insurance options. Be sure all your questions are answered to avoid surprises along the journey.

Next item of the process is to secure times and dates of pickup and delivery for your vehicle. You must prepare your vehicle for shipment also checking and making a list of details such as engine function, gas levels, security features and overall condition both interior and exterior. When the shipping company arrives to pick up your car, go over your check list with him and have him sign the list denoting his agreement and then you sign it too. Make a copy so you each have proof of what you agreed to.

Check in with the shipping company to make sure all is well and there are no further details to take care of. When you have been given confirmation of delivery and the condition of your car is satisfactory, you are expected to pay the remaining balance of the invoice. Wrap it all up with a thank you and positive feedback – you may be back. Follow these steps and all should flow smoothly.

Auto shipping is comprised of many steps and due diligence must be applied to all of them. Auto transport is a business that requires a vast amount of expertise and knowledge and decisions must not be made in haste. Do background checks, ask questions and prepare yourself for the unexpected and your car will have a successful journey.

Benefits Of A 3PL

September 19th, 2010

At SpiderShip.com we use two different 3PLs that are very good at less than truckload transportation. Together they move nearly $4,000,000,000 worth of freight annually.

3PL means a third party logistics provider. All 3PLs have different strengths and weaknesses. Because of that they all target different areas of the transportation world. Some may be very good at warehousing, or fulfillment, while others may handle the transportation of goods.

Almost all 3PLs deal with some sort of trucking. Mostly FTL and LTL freight shipping. Many are very good at international freight shipping.

Third party logistics providers all have different strengths and weaknesses. Because of that they all target different areas of the transportation world. Some may be very good at warehousing, or fulfillment, while others may handle the transportation of goods. Some are strong in certain regions of the US.

That quantity is very staggering. Any small company can sign up to use the online freight rater and receive volume discounts even if they don’t ship more than 4 times a month. A company run and operated by a single person could be paying the same freight rates as a fortune 500 company.

The next greatest advantage is the versatility of having over 65 freight carriers at your disposal. If you don’t ship the same package to the same destination every time you ship you probably can benefit from a variety of carriers. Some carriers will have good lanes to the Pacific Northwest while others will be strong in the south.

Trucking is part of every logistics team. Most do well with FTL and LTL freight shipping. Many are very good at international freight shipping or ocean containers.

One day you may only need to ship from LA to San Diego. And maybe it is going to a residential delivery and then Oak Harbor could give you the best price because they have a special on residential deliveries. The next day you may ship from LA to New York you may find the best carrier to be a large national carrier like YRC or FedEx.

Spider Ship is proud to boast access to all of the top carriers though our online freight quotes system. A very technologically advanced online freight quotes system.

Moving Boxes: 3 Things To Look For

June 30th, 2010

Sure, any box can be a moving box, but are your boxes reliable? Believe it or not, having the right kind of box is going to be the difference between a smooth move and a hectic one. Not having the right box can result in boxes giving out and breaking your belongings. Not having the right box can also mean that you’re not packing everything you could inside of one box. That can actually increase your moving costs if you’re using a moving service that charges by the hour, by the day, or by the truckload. More boxes mean more time and more space, so you want to make sure you plan this out right.

The supermarket box

Many individuals call their local supermarket and ask them if they can put boxes aside for them because they are moving. What happens is the mover finds that there are more little boxes than big boxes when they pick them up. Another thing to consider is the fact that all of these boxes have been used to ship items before and have now been broken down. This means you have to tape them back together over top of the old tape that was cut through when the employees were breaking them down. This can actually interfere with how well the bottom of the box comes together when you are taping it back together.

Supermarket boxes also consist of cardboard durability that can vary. It can be somewhat hard to determine how much weight a box can actually hold and, with all of the small boxes, you’re risking having to make more trips while you move.

The moving box

Moving supply stores sell moving boxes that are meant just for moving. They are durable so that your belongings are protected and they come in the sizes you need. You do have the option to choose from new boxes or used moving boxes. Used boxes are going to be cheaper, of course. However, you have to ask yourself if you want boxes someone else has used before. If you don’t have a problem with that, then you can go for the used box.

Here are three things you want to look for in a moving box:

The size: You may need different sizes for different things. If you have fragile items, you don’t want to stack too many of them on top of each other. However, books and other unbreakable items can be stacked until a comfortable weight is reached within the box.

Weight: It is important that you evaluate the weight that the box is capable of holding. This is something a supermarket box won’t tell you. You are safer knowing the weight because you then know how much you can put inside the box.

Type: There are different types of boxes such as dish boxes and wardrobe boxes. These boxes are specially designed to better protect your belongings. By moving items in boxes that are especially made for those items, you are reducing the chances of damage.

What to do?

It is up to you as to what boxes you want to use, but know that the moving box is going to give you the security you need when looking for moving boxes and moving supplies. Sometimes it’s not worth taking the risk and hoping that a box won’t break. Sometimes hoping that a box that is destined to break won’t break isn’t going to do much good. But having a box that is designed for what you’re using it for and even comes with usage instructions to ensure the utmost safety of your items is worth the cost.

How The Progress Of Mail Service In The US Correlate With Shipping Costs

June 10th, 2010

The concept of retail has at its basis the presentation of goods or services to a consumer base in the effort to entice the customers to make a purchase. In all the time that capitalism has been in effect, despite its many forms and regulations this basic tenet has not changed. What has made a significant change is the cost related to this shipping of products to retail facilities.

Adjusting the costs for inflation, a gallon of gasoline in 1970 would cost approximately $1.60 compared to its current price of over twice that. But more important than the outright cost of fuel is the inconsistency and inability to control that cost. Unlike most products that adhere to a supply and demand interaction with regard to price, fuel is unique in the introduction of international politics to the equation. In the early 1970s the so called oil crisis was not the result of inadequate supply, but a conscious decision by members of OPEC to reduce production and delivery to the US as punishment for American support to Israel.

But it is not just the cost of petroleum that has made it more expensive to move product from place to place. The cost of packaging, much of it made from petroleum has also increased. We can seen the increase in our supermarkets, the cost of paper bags had always been more than for plastic bags, but that is no longer the case.

We have always had a need to communicate with one another, and in the early going the United States had an expanse that was larger than the young nation could easily handle in terms of staying in touch. The going was rough on a number of terms. The distances were unparalleled, and the exposure to the elements, animals and unfriendly indigenous peoples made cross country delivery a sporting proposition at best.

Cities began receiving free mail delivery in 1828, but those living in rural areas had to either make the long trip into town or pay to have their mail delivered by a private carrier. The oldest agricultural organization in the nation pushed to introduce free delivery to farmers. It took 33 years to come to fruition, but it was established as an official service under President Grover Cleveland in 1891.

The idea of free postal service throughout the United States was egalitarian but in its practical execution it was expensive. There was considerable resistance to the notion for that expense and because the companies that made their living delivering mail to the farmlands believed it would destroy their business, stores in town feared it would reduce the number of visits by rural residents and would therefore decrease their market.

The fairness of the practice belied the cost of delivering the service. Eventually the idea of prepaying for postal service was made compulsory to deal with the expense of making the deliveries. This cost would be amplified as the effort to extend service to the west all the way to California was attacked in earnest. The pony express was probably one of the nations more notable and romantic efforts in the continued work to assure total international package delivery.

In the modern world, anyone thinking about starting up as an entrepreneur had better do their research and cost analysis before they begin. Those that underestimate the expense related to getting whatever their product or service is to the consuming public does so at their peril. Shipping will remain an integral and significant cost to business until we find an alternative to fossil fuels.
