Suspension Shock Absorbers

June 17th, 2010

One of the most important components on a vehicle is its shock absorbers, as they prevent excessive and dangerous motion of the motor vehicle and its suspension. If motor vehicles do not have shocks fitted, they would be very difficult to control on the road. Due to the bouncing that would occur, the tires will not touch the road surface and braking and trying to turn a corner will become hazardous.

To get a basic idea of how a shock works, imagine driving down a road where there are speed bumps. If the car simply has springs, but no shocks, and goes over the speed bump, the springs will continue to move back and forth until they get rid of all the power they gained when they compressed. This will cause the car to sway and bounce, once it has gone over the speed bump.

Now, think of a vehicle that has springs as well as shocks going across the speed hump. The springs would still take in the hump, however, the difference between the two scenarios is that those shock absorbers would absorb the movement of the springs, changing the energy produced into heat and will stop the vehicle’s swaying.

The way the shock works is that it makes use of two valves which increases the effectiveness of it. One of the valves is connected to a piston rod, which is connected to a piston. This piston sits in a tube filled with hydraulic oil. When the car wheel hits a bump in the road, this causes the spring to coil and uncoil. The energy of the spring is transferred to the shock absorber through the upper mount, down through the piston rod and into the piston.

Fluids leak through small holes in the piston as it moves down and up in the tube. As these holes are quite small, a little bit of fluid which is under great pressure due to the movement of the piston, passes through. It then slows the piston and this slows the spring. This process allows the dampening of shock by the spring’s movement to enter the shock absorbers.

All modern shocks are speed sensitive, meaning that the faster the suspension moves, the more resistance the shock absorber provides. This allows shocks to adjust to the conditions of the road and to inhibit all of the dangerous actions that take place in a vehicle, like swaying from side to side and creating problems when braking.

The condition of your shock absorbers should be checked when you start losing control of the vehicle upon braking and trying to enter corners. You will also feel the unevenness when you travel on uneven road surfaces or go over bumps in the road.

The largest online selection of Rancho RS5000 shocks is available at MY4BY OFF ROAD. Rancho RS5128 is a popular choice for Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler applications.

Off Roading Essentials

January 21st, 2010

Are you planning to go off roading with your jeep? If so, here are a few items to consider taking with you, in case of an emergency. When planning an off road trip, it is essential to take certain tools with you. You never know when you will have to replace or take apart and fix a part of you vehicle. It is best to always be prepared! When preparing your emergency kit, include: open end wrenches, a few metric wrenches, multi-purpose tools, pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers.

You never know what will happen when you’re out on the trail. Just in case you have a bigger problem that occurs out on the trail, add a socket set, allen wrenches, diagonal cutters, wire crimper. Wire cutters and a crimper, a propane torch, and solder iron can also be very useful. Hammers, a T style lug wrench and jumper cables can also be very helpful.

A Service Station would carry all of the above plus a part retriever tool (telescoping magnetic or grabber), 12pt. 1/4″ socket for carrier cross-shafts. They also carry straps, battery terminal cleaning tools and welders. These service stations can be major conveniences during an emergency.

At this point you might think that it would be much easier to just carry a whole spare truck with you. However, this would not be very practical. The best way to figure out what spares you need is to see what breaks on your truck or similar rigs and carry spares. But, there is just some basic equipment that you should always carry no matter what. Hoses, several sizes of hose clamps, a length of vacuum line, some brake line, fuses, belts, oil filter, and a fuel filters are always a must.

Old parts can be a source of spares. Next time you do a tune-up keep the old plugs and distributor cap as spares. Also remember that you can limp home without items such as thermostats in a pinch. Jeeps are a great vehicle and can be a lot of fun. It is important to take good care of them and keep the maintenance up on them. If taken care of, they will last a long time. Jeeps are fun and affordable. So get yours today!

My Grandfather And His Jeep

November 16th, 2009

My elementary years were spent in a rustic barrio in the highlands of a mountainous province in the Philippines. It wasn’t that far away but due to road conditions back then, a trip to the nearest city would take about 6 hours and my hometown was 8 hours away.

My grandpa was a city boy when he was younger but later decided to live and embrace rural life. Once a month, he would take us down to our hometown on a long ride to visit our relatives. During those days when we arrive in the city, I would be dying with envy of the people who rode automobiles with rolled up windows and air conditioning. I would be dreaming of arriving in my hometown in an air conditioned car protected from the heat and dust I hated so much back then.

You can imagine how amazed I am when people would approach my grandfather and rave how awesome our ride is. They would say they can’t believe how easy and quick it is for us to get to the city from where we came from. I could even remember then telling my grandpa that they would trade their brand new cars for my grandfather’s old and reliable jeep. Are these people serious? What they have are brand new automobiles and we have a second hand contraption.

That old jeep was purchased second hand by my grandfather. Firstly, he had it repainted a deep brown shade for a new look. Originally, the jeep didn’t have comfortable front seats so grandpa found some seats of an old car and had it reupholstered.

The trips the jeep makes were really long ones and my grandfather always received rations and gasoline gifts from his company. Some were gifts from uncles who were so fond of him. He always had that effect on people. A lot of them wanted to please my grandfather. The original gasoline tank just wouldn’t do so he had found a tank from a big truck and had it installed under the front seats and it occupied the whole row.

He also had leather roofings installed on the jeep. He connected a miniature electric fan, and even brought along his tiny portable set to be attached to our ride. I have to admit that despite me wanting a new car so much, looking back, we did have a wonderful jeep.

That jeep has been with us since I was in the third grade. I remember grandpa taking me to the airport in the rig when I was leaving to attend college in the capital region. By then it has been with us for a decade already. When I came home after graduation, my grandfather was already too old to make the trip. The jeep was still with him though.

The jeep might have been owned by somebody else before we had it, but it gave to us service that no other vehicle of ours to this day ever did. It has exceeded all expectations and the amount of memories we had in that jeep is by far more precious than any other rig we ever had.

Quite simply you can beat a care that has been loved and cared for. Ours was by far the most valued ride of all.

Are you looking for a Jeep for sale ? Why dont you check out some of the great deals available from our store. Perhaps you’re looking for a used Jeep Wrangler. Well, it’s your lucky day coz we sell them to. All just great deals for your money, treat yourself today.
